A Warning about Illegal Tooth Whitening
10 May 2016
The wellbeing and safety of our patients is our number one priority, that’s why our dental surgeons and nurses are expertly trained in every procedure we offer.
Unfortunately this isn’t the case for many beauticians claiming to be professionally qualified in cosmetic procedures such as teeth whitening.
Councils in England and Wales are calling out for tougher penalties to be imposed on anyone selling illegal kits.
The Local Government Association found that some of these kits contain 300 times the legal limit of hydrogen peroxide. Using these products is essentially brushing with bleach and could cause blistering, burns and further damage.
Buying these kits online or visiting a beautician claiming to be licensed are both extremely risky. The legal limit for use by the public in the UK is 0.1% hydrogen peroxide or 6% for dentists and other registered practitioners.
Professional dentists are the only people legally allowed to perform teeth whitening services at a business premise.
If you are interested in starting a teeth whitening procedure, we advise you to do your research and not sign up to any quick fix deals. Always check credentials and make sure whoever is offering the service is a registered, reputable dentist.
